<image:title>Overview - The McNab Centre is developing new ways to ‘evolve’ cancer drugs: ‘Chemical Evolution’ meets the ‘Chemputer’</image:title>
<image:caption>Regius Professors Lee Cronin and Ross Cagan have come together at the McNab to develop a completely new way to ‘evolve’ cancer drugs. Artificial Intelligence, robotics, chemistry, fruit flies, and human-in-a-dish technology are brought together to ‘evolve’ complex drugs previously impossible to imagine. A novel lead to therapies that is fast and cost-effective.</image:caption>

<image:title>Scotland - Scotland has a long and proud history of innovation in the field of medicine; from pioneering surgical anaesthesia in the 1800s to the discovery of penicillin in 1928. We at the McNab are inspired by this history. We are innovators, taking risks and developing new technologies to push the field forward. Our goal: improve outcomes for cancer patients everywhere.</image:title>

<image:title>Scotland - Scotland has important challenges to realise its potential in the 21st century. We have the lowest life expectancy in Western Europe, in part due to diseases like KRAS-driven cancers. These worrying statistics are linked to a plethora of factors, including Scotland’s industrial past. The McNab is focused on cancers that are especially problematic in our community, as well as helping Glasgow’s amazing teachers nurture the next generation of STEM scientists.</image:title>

<image:title>Scotland - Today, Scotland is at the forefront of health innovation. Glasgow’s strong oncology vision is organised within the internationally renowned Cancer Research UK (CRUK), Beatson Institute, and Institute of Cancer Sciences (ICS) within the University of Glasgow. The McNab Centre is helping to build a new future of health innovation, an important pathway to a strong economic future. In this way, we embrace our obligations to the Scottish community.</image:title>

<image:title>Cancer Models - At the McNab, we are developing and using ‘human-on-a-chip’ technology to better understand how cancer cells interact with the whole body and how this changes the way we treat patients. This method uses artificially grown cells that resemble human organs, allowing us to better simulate human disease. Despite their promise, human-based models have limitations when it comes to simulating the whole body. We house several of the world’s elite Drosophila (fruit fly) and mouse cancer scientists. At the McNab, we are combining these different methods into a single, seamless platform. We believe difficult problems require bold and innovative approaches. A fly-mouse-human platform is just one of our innovations.</image:title>

<image:title>Drug Development - Precision medicine is the matching of therapy (such as a drug) with specific aspects of a patient’s disease. Most of these ‘targeted therapies’ are designed to hit a single target, such as KRAS. While a promising approach, these drugs have overall proved limited in providing sustained benefit to the patient. At the McNab, we aim to develop a next generation of drugs that address cancer in the context of the whole body. How? By combining artificial intelligence, sophisticated cancer models, and robotics-based chemistry (Prof. Cronin’s ‘Chemputer’), we seek to use our unique ‘Chemical Evolution’ approach to find new therapeutic spaces. This futuristic approach is unique to the McNab.</image:title>
